Fit Camp is for Everyone
We’ve been highlighting the success and stories of our members of Fit Camp for several months. Celebrating their growth, loss and change, as well as the unique differences that make everyone’s Fit Camp story special. These stories reminded us that FitCamp is for everyone. Fit Camp is for beginners. Fit Camp is for runners. Fit Camp is for moms. Fit Camp is for working professionals.
We thought it was only fair if we, the owners and coaches, shared our transformational stories too. We were right where our members were when they started, and right where you might be at this moment: On the verge of giving it a try, wondering what might happen if you did.
Teresa's Fit Camp Transformation Story
I am not new to the fitness scene. Over the years I’ve participated in various bootcamps, been a member of local gyms, tried all of the new and trendy workouts and even taught fitness classes. Each time I had the same outcome: lack of desire, interest and motivation. Then in January of 2014 I was told I needed rotator cuff surgery on my right shoulder, hence, my yoga journey began, with a certification to teach just six short months later. Yoga entered my life just when I needed it most, as it challenged me physically, mentally and spiritually.
In September of 2014, I began teaching yoga and was ready to expand my schedule. I asked Justin Carpenter at Foolish Things about teaching yoga on Saturdays. He asked me to email Jessica Sprenkel to set up an interview. The next day Jessica and I met at Foolish Things to talk about the particulars of a donation yoga class. Two weeks later I had a Saturday yoga class on my schedule. I taught every Saturday for a year and a half. Meanwhile, Jessica and I became good friends and began to collaborate opening a fitness studio together offering yoga and fitness classes. Originally, I was planning to teach all yoga and she would teach all of the fitness classes. It wasn’t long before we saw the benefits of the other’s craft. We are both Certified Yoga Alliance Instructors and ACE Personal Trainers.
I joined the very first FitCamp, May of 2016. I knew it was important to our success for me (the recruiter) to be able to provide feedback about the FitCamp Series to new clients as we began to build the program and increase our class size. To be honest, I was a little skeptical, some would even say a non-believer. I thought if I participated in strength and resistance training, I would gain too much muscle mass and get bulky. I wasn’t sure I’d be able to do all of the circuits/moves or finish the repetitions. I was one of the older students and wasn’t sure I would be able to keep up. The circuits are set up to challenge and build all over body strength and provide modifications and multiple ways to execute each move. I thoroughly love the circuits, the format, the challenge and the community we have built.
This is a program that anyone can do whether you begin with weights, modify a broad jump or take a break partway through a circuit, which I did, especially when step-ups was on the board. When I started I could not do three full push-ups. I began on my knees, but Jessica asked me to lift my knees and try full push-ups. Two other FitCampers completed two more circuits before I finished my set of push-ups. I summoned Jessica over to hold my feet to the floor to assist me on full body roll-ups, although it took me a little while, I was able to do the entire set with her encouragement. I continued to show up for classes, push myself every single repetition and slowly began to increase the weights I lifted. Today, SIX FitCamp sessions; one and a half years later, I have completely transformed my body. I weigh the same in both pictures, although my after picture looks like I have lost 20 pounds.
There are so many reasons I love StudiOne FitCamp; It provided me an outlet for pent up emotions I had after The University of Tulsa budget issues resulted in my position being cut. Shortly after, Steve was diagnosed with cancer and went through seven weeks of aggressive treatment, I knew I had to remain strong emotionally and physically. I knew I had to take care of myself, or I wouldn’t be able to take care of Steve, or my family. FitCamp was a place where I could release negative energy, stay focused on the workout, continue to build overall body strength and lean on our community of support. I am not sure if I could have endured the challenges and been able to replace uncertain times with a positive outlook without it. I have increased my overall strength and flexibility in my body, improved my sleeping pattern, increased my energy and have had a little boost of self-confidence. This program is the best fitness series I have ever done, the only one I have ever stuck to, the only one that has ever kept me excited and the only one that has kept me challenged. I have made a conscious decision to make StudiOne FitCamp a continued part of my lifestyle. I could not have made it through the past year and a half with a positive attitude, if it weren’t for fitCamp and Jessica Sprenkel. It has changed my life.
